Shipping Terms

Shipping Terms Explained:
FOB, C&F, CIF, and More

When engaging in international trade, understanding shipping terms is essential. These terms define the responsibilities of the seller and buyer for the cost, risk, and delivery of goods. Below is an explanation of the most commonly used shipping terms: FOB (Free On Board), C&F (Cost and Freight), CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight), and more.

1. FOB (Free On Board)

FOB is a term used to indicate when the responsibility for the goods transfers from the seller to the buyer. There are two main types:

    • FOB Origin (Shipping Point): The buyer assumes responsibility for the goods as soon as they leave the seller’s premises. The buyer handles all shipping costs, including freight, insurance, and any risk that occurs during transit.

      • Seller’s Responsibility: Deliver goods to the carrier at the point of shipment.
      • Buyer’s Responsibility: All costs and risks once the goods are handed to the carrier.
    • FOB Destination: The seller is responsible for the goods until they are delivered to the buyer’s location. The seller handles all shipping costs, insurance, and risk during transit.

      • Seller’s Responsibility: Deliver goods to the destination and bear all costs and risks until delivery.
      • Buyer’s Responsibility: Take possession of the goods at the destination.

2. C&F (Cost and Freight)

C&F means the seller is responsible for the cost of goods and shipping (freight), but the risk is transferred to the buyer once the goods are loaded onto the shipping vessel.

    • Seller’s Responsibility:
      • Pay for the cost of the goods and freight.
      • Ensure the goods reach the port of shipment.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility:
      • Assume risk once goods are loaded onto the vessel.
      • Handle any insurance and additional costs (such as unloading, customs clearance, etc.).

Note: C&F does not include insurance. If the buyer wants insurance, they must arrange and pay for it separately.

3. CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight)

CIF is similar to C&F, but it includes the cost of insurance in addition to the cost of goods and shipping. The seller bears the responsibility for the goods, freight, and insurance until the goods reach the port of destination.

    • Seller’s Responsibility:

      • Pay for the cost of goods, freight, and insurance.
      • Deliver the goods to the shipping vessel and cover the risk during transit.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility:

      • Assume risk once the goods reach the destination port.
      • Handle customs clearance and any costs beyond the destination port.

In CIF, the seller must insure the goods to protect the buyer during transit, but it’s typically minimal coverage.

4. EXW (Ex Works)

EXW is a shipping term where the seller’s responsibility is minimized. The seller makes the goods available at their premises or another agreed location, and the buyer is responsible for all costs and risks from that point onward.

    • Seller’s Responsibility: Make the goods available at their location.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility: Handle all transportation, customs duties, insurance, and risks from the point of origin.

5. DAP (Delivered at Place)

DAP means that the seller is responsible for delivering the goods to a specified destination, but the buyer is responsible for import duties and taxes upon arrival.

    • Seller’s Responsibility: Pay for all costs to deliver the goods to the destination point (shipping, handling, etc.).
    • Buyer’s Responsibility: Pay for import duties, taxes, and other charges related to the goods once they arrive.

6. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

DDP represents the highest level of responsibility for the seller. The seller assumes full responsibility for all costs and risks to deliver the goods to the buyer’s location, including duties and taxes.

    • Seller’s Responsibility: All costs and risks associated with delivering the goods to the buyer’s destination, including shipping, handling, customs clearance, and taxes.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility: Only receive the goods.

7. FCA (Free Carrier)

Under FCA, the seller is responsible for delivering the goods to a carrier, who then takes responsibility for the transportation. This term is commonly used for air freight and multimodal shipments.

    • Seller’s Responsibility: Deliver the goods, cleared for export, to the carrier or another named place.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility: Assume all costs and risks after the goods are handed over to the carrier.

8. FAS (Free Alongside Ship)

FAS means that the seller is responsible for delivering the goods alongside the vessel at the port of shipment, ready for loading.

    • Seller’s Responsibility: Deliver goods alongside the ship and cover export duties.
    • Buyer’s Responsibility: Pay for freight, loading, and all risks once the goods are alongside the ship.
